Have you ever been into a restaurant and noticed that the carpet looked trashed? I really feel sympathy for restauranteurs that have carpet for flooring in their establishments. Without proper walk-off matting out of the kitchen and into the front door, their work is cut out for them. You have the grease from the kitchen getting tracked out all day/night long from the wait staff, and then you have the customers coming in from the parking lot which is usually asphalt, and a lot of restaurants that are in strip malls like this one are not allowed to have a large mat out front to wipe off the asphalt oils from peoples' shoes to prevent it from getting onto the carpet. This post is about a problem that we helped a restaurant owner in Jackson Hole solve in a mere few hours. I first noticed this carpet when I was cleaning an adjacent commercial building this past spring when I stopped in for lunch. I asked the owner if he would like an offer to clean his carpet. I was astounded when he had said that he had paid to have it cleaned by a local well known carpet cleaning company in Jackson Wyoming. I looked around and blurted out that it looked like crap! Never one to miss an opportunity to insert my foot into my mouth, I left the restaurant and as I walked away I thought to myself that I must have offended the poor guy and thought I would call on him in a few weeks or so to talk about fixing this problem.
At the time of this encounter I had just ventured into the very low moisture method of carpet cleaning that we are using now. If I had been hired the next day I most confidently would have gone in there with my truckmounted steam super extractor and melted the grease out and taken it with me, only to have been called back in a few days to do it again like the first guy...
Really greasy carpet when cleaned with hot water extraction will always re-soil. Why? The grease gets so embedded into the backing of the carpet that as the surface gets steam washed and vacuumed by the truckmount, the backing still has a lot of grease in it. The surface fibers dry faster than the backing and then the process of wicking takes hold and voila! the grease gets pulled up the strands into the face fibers and you get to start all over again. Fun huh? This stuff needs to be taken off in layers, and unless you hook up some serious heated fans you will fight it and fight it. How do I know? I've done it lots of times this way, and clients do not like to pay for call backs, and I don't like to do them either. Neither party wins with a call back.
As time has gone on this year with the introduction of our new very low moisture carpet cleaning process, we have gotten very comfortable with the encapsulation detergents that are available and feel that we have a good enough handle on which cleaning solutions to use when and where. Here are some pics to document how this job went...

We moved all the tables and chairs and vacuumed all the baseboards. This is standard operating procedure for Restore Your Carpet.

We moved the tables and chairs into the walkway , then vacuumed the other side. You can see the line on the right where we had wiped the grease away.
There really isn't much more to say after showing the video of this process. We basically have found a way to wipe away the grease and crud that a truckmount could not do. We have done this in the commercial carpet cleaning application as well as residential. Basically this is physics. We are combining the laws of physics with our extensive knowledge of cleaning solutions to get an amazing result. This technology has not been given the credit that it deserves, and I hope to be one of those that helps move the process along in making encapsulation(very low moisture) carpet cleaning more respected in this industry for clients and professionals alike.
